Molon Labe stickers are everywhere- it is a phrase the sums up the defiance of many of us perfectly. We added the slightly lesser known phrase ‘In umbra igitur pugnabimus’ to better clarify.
At the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BC, King Leonidas of the Spartans led an army of about 7,000 Greeks against an army of Persians, led by Xerxes, that numbered over 300,000. Historian Herodotus records that after two days of intensive fighting, less than 300 Spartan soldiers were left to defend the Pass of Thermopylae. The Persians taunted them by saying “Our arrows shall be so numerous, they will block out the sun!” to which Leonidas responded: “Then we will fight in the shade!” (translated into Latin: In umbra igitur pugnabimus.) It is a phrase that clarifies- no matter what the odds are, still we fight.
